We’re so thrilled to share this published feature with you! Our wonderful clients, Warren and Scott, had the pleasure of being featured in Modern Luxury Weddings California not just once, but twice! First, in the Fall/Winter 2017 issue, Warren and Scott’s engagement photo was published along with the story of their first meeting. A second feature followed in the Spring/Summer 2018 edition of the very same magazine with a feature on their cat-themed wedding. Are you curious about how the grooms met and what sealed the deal? Read on!

Warren and Scott’s story began in June 2013 when they met on OKCupid, an online dating website. Scott was attracted to Warren’s online profile, which featured many photos of Warren’s two adorable cats, Milo and DJ.

Scott’s pickup line, “Hello, Fellow Cat Lover!”, was unusual but very refreshing, thought Warren. Warren liked Scott’s online profile as well, which featured his adopted cat son, Jack. It was clear Warren and Scott shared a love of felines. Warren responded to Scott: “You had me at ‘cat’!” (These two phrases are now engraved on the inside of the couple’s wedding bands.) Shortly after they started dating, they had a play date for their cats. The boys got along so well, that the connection was sealed. The rest, as they say, is history.

Next up…a purrrrfect wedding plan. Since the cats had been so much a part of Scott and Warren’s connection to each other, we had to make sure they were part of the wedding celebration too. And that’s where our design skills were put to work. Integrated throughout the wedding design was a subtle and sophisticated cat theme. Working with a cat herringbone pattern created by our friends at Yonder Design, the invitations, 3-tier cake, lounge pillows and even the dance floor carried the the cat theme throughout the events. And of course, we had to bring one of the actual cats with us for important duties and official ring bearer. Don’t worry, we’ll share all the fun images by Arrowood Photography with you in our next blog entry. Until then, dear readers, stay tuned.

Today’s blog entry features a photo shoot we designed at Campovida in Hopland, California. Campovida is a small family farm and winery with big dreams. The owners are cool and inspired, and the vibe of the venue is relaxed, low-key and comfortable. The barn at Campovida dates back to 1890. Our goal was to reinvigorate the rustic space with classic farm style elements, adding the sensibility and flare of modern design.

Starting with a classic element like farm-style tables was a must. Down the center, we laid a burlap runner topped with modern aesthetics – metal framed glass globes and spheres, slate-colored ceramic vases of varying shapes and sizes and slim pillar candles inside glass cylinders. Softening the modern styling, the team at Revel Floral brought earthy, organic elements to table. Opting for fresh greens, Marisa and Katie mixed familiar flora (Green Ranunculus, Succulents, Aspidistra leaves, Brasilia Berries) with a few unusual varieties of plants (Green Broccoli Hydrangeas, Euphorbia and the famously fuzzy Dianthus flowers) blending traditional and modern varietals with respect to the original design inspiration.

Suspended above the table’s center, a greenery chandelier hung parallel to the burlap runner and it’s budding floral arrangements. Created on-site, the greenery chandelier mirrored the arrangements on the tabletop below with the addition of Lemon Leaf and Boxwood bunches.

For the place settings, we let modern styling dictate direction. Stunning place settings from Encore Event Rentals – square plates wrapped in champagne colored napkins- were paired with matte black flatware. Stemware was placed in diagonal lines to the right of each setting. For seating, metal chairs were paired with each setting, further blending the rustic and modern design elements.

Lastly, we couldn’t leave the barn without admiring the interior sliding barn door along the back wall. Here we staged a cozy lounge seating area with Blueprint Studio’s Aviator Collection that continued our blend of rustic and modern design. Above the lounge, centered with the barn door, we chose three rustic, sphere-shaped chandeliers to cast warm lighting on the area below.

In closing, we’d like to thank all of our fellow event professionals who contributed time and energy to this styled shoot. As always, we couldn’t have done it without you!

Major League Baseball’s Hunter Pence and his bride, vlogger Alexis Cozombolidis, dreamed of a fantasy wedding. The fantasy combined three themes – Mamma Mia, designed specifically to celebrate Alexis’ Greek culture, Harry Potter, and Game of Thrones, both of which the adventurous couple adore. Given that challenge, we merged a Greek theme with magical fantasy that would delight ABBA, Jon Snow and the wizards of Gryffindor House.

The fun-loving couple wanted their guest to have a true experience. So to make this adventuresome wedding even more of an experience for them, guests were told that it was an “unplugged wedding” – no cell phones would be allowed, and no clues were provided for the location of the ceremony or receptions in advance. Guests were instructed to gather in front of Hotel Vitale where they were greeted by our staff, who tagged and bagged their cellphones for safekeeping. After boarding the transportation to both the church and reception, pre-recorded videos of Hunter and Alexis dropped clues to where they were going.

To begin the celebrations, the ceremony venue was held at Ascension Greek Orthodox Cathedral, with an aisle lined with Gardenias and Texas Smilax garlands (Hunter is a Texan), large brass glass candle lanterns and eight – six foot wide wrought iron chandeliers flanked the ceremony from above. Garden roses and peonies adorned the altar. After the ceremony, guests enjoyed an all-Greek cocktail reception on the Cathedral Platia in a 60’x100′ tent, complete with a 20-foot blue and white windmill representing the iconic Mykonos windmills of the Greek island. A Mykonos-blue color palette, yellow lemons, olive trees, fuchsia bougainvillea potted plants and cocktail table arrangements accented an all-white décor, added a festive vibrancy of the Mediterranean. For two hours, an eight-piece Greek band and 30 Greek dancers entertained the 250 guests. To continue the fun, the bride and groom slipped on matching Converse All Stars and showed off the results of private dancing lessons as they led everyone in their Mamma Mia celebration!

Once guests arrived at Epic Steak, they entered the worlds of Harry Potter and Game of Thrones. Servings of lamb lollipops and lamb chops were threaded throughout the menus to transition from the Mamma Mia theme into the other magical themes represented by a whole roasted lamb

The entry tent brought out the Game of Thrones royal purple in the lounge furniture and pipe and drape. Medieval copper chandeliers draped with green garlands hung from the ceiling where guests sipped a Pensive Signature cocktail, noshed on bite-sized wood oven pizza, steak bites, and enjoyed three live musicians – one a ukulele player the bride loves, who later sang “Honestly” for their first dance. Guests plucked their purple escort cards inscribed with their names from a tree. With their RSVP, guests sent in self-portraits before the wedding and a spirit animal reader analyzed each attendee. Everyone’s unique result was revealed on their escort cards and the description was denoted on each guest’s personalized menu as a tie-in to Harry Potter.

As guests crossed through a connecting tent, decorated predominantly in purple velvet drape and furniture with flourishes of metal containers holding greenery, they entered the dimly lit dinner/dance tent to discover several hundred floating candles individually hung with clear filament over six massive 40-foot long kings table and a 24-foot long head table. The candles varied in height from eight inches to a foot long. The head table featured two gold ornate thrones lined in black velvet much like those seen in Game of Thrones. A mixture of greenery, including moss, and touches of purple on a silver draped background dominated throughout the space. Above the head table on a 28-foot moss wall, hung the couple’s custom-designed, embroidered family crest featuring their spirit animals; the deer is the spirit animal of the Alexis; the goat is Hunter’s spirit animal. We incorporated elements of their Greek and Texas heritage into their custom family crest banner – lemons, olives, an oil rig, corn and of course their spirit animals. Banners are commonly used in both fantasy stories, and this was a special addition to the celebration.

For the dinner tables, we elected not to use table linen, as we wanted the wood tables to reflect the Harry Potter/Games of Throne medieval feel. Moss runners with everything imaginable from Dumbledore’s office – stars, purple potion vials, compasses, magnifying glasses, and votives encased in gold terrariums – glowed in the candlelight. The tables were named after sets of Magic: The Gathering, a trading card game that Hunter and Alexis loves to play. In Game of Thrones royal court style – place settings included white china on copper chargers, copper flatware; taupe hem-stitched napkins; gold-rimmed crystal stemware and a pewter water goblet.

A three-course dinner was topped off with an enchanting three-tiered wedding cake decorated with sugar fresh cranberries and fresh rosemary sprigs and flowers on a table dripping moss, and numerous dessert stations. Enthralled guests joined the couple on the dance floor complete with the A&H Monogram gobo. Towards the end of the evening, guests viewed a final video of the bride and groom, 60 years in the future aged with hair and makeup, reflecting on their wedding day. One of their friends from Saturday Night Live wrote the script!

Guests sent the bride and groom off in style with a tower of sparklers, waiving and cheering the happy couple as they drove off to the Fairmont San Francisco Penthouse.

“You hear people say their wedding was the best day of their life, but you don’t understand it until going through it yourself.” – Hunter and Alexis

Thank you Hunter and Alexis for allowing us to make your wedding dreams come true! Cheers!

There’s so much to love about weddings. But when you have the chance to design and plan a destination wedding, there’s even MORE to love about weddings! Especially when the two amazing grooms chose the Big Island of Hawaii as their destination. Tom and Axel wanted their celebration to be an intimate gathering for dear friends and family; a weekend of events designed to be relaxing and fun, catered to their guests varying interests, and above all, a very memorable weekend.

The Four Seasons Resort Hualalai was the chosen spot, as they have so many fond memories of this resort and wanted to share their experiences with their guests. With breathtaking ocean waves, soft sandy beach, delectable cuisine, and legendary Four Seasons service, the entire wedding weekend was smooth sailing.

In dedicating this blog entry to Tom and Axel – Happy Anniversary! (and our love of destination weddings) we’ve chosen some of our favorite highlights featuring the wedding ceremony and reception. We hope you enjoy dreaming of island getaways and destination weddings, and if you decide a DW is the right way to go, you know who to call. Mahalo!

Along with our love and congratulations, we’re dedicating this blog entry to one of our very own and her new husband. Nancy and Dustin were married at the Fairmont San Jose and their beautiful wedding has been featured in Today’s Bride Magazine San Francisco. This couple’s style added a twist to a traditional ballroom wedding. Opting for black linens with pops of color in the florals and a stationery suite to match, Nancy and Dustin’s wedding was a formal affair with modern flair. Congratulations, love birds!
